Your Nutritionist: Too Fat to Fish?

April 30, 2009 by Dr. Bill

This morning I got an email from an acquaintance who has just been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. I really try not to read email first thing in the morning, because if I run across a good story like this one, I forget the time and don’t get on to other things.

John loves to eat and loves to drink beer. He is in his mid-fifties and weighs about 20-25 pounds more than he should, so he’s not exactly fat, but he’s certainly not thin either. With this new diagnosis of Type II Diabetes, he is going to have to make some lifestyle changes, if he knows what’s good for him.

John weighs about 225-230 and is 6′1″ His email said that his family practitioner recommended a nutritionist for him after she diagnosed him with diabetes. I think John could get back into shape in about three months.

John took his doctor’s advice and made an appointment with the nutritionist. Upon arriving for his appointment he was checked-in by a receptionist who really could be called obese — she was probably 250 pounds and maybe 5′5″

John thought it was a little odd that a nutrition clinic would have a lardass at the front door, but with all the crazy laws on hiring, he thought that maybe they didn’t have a choice.

He waited for about twenty minutes, before his name was called and he was ushered into a big office. Then the nutrionist arrived, and John was stunned. She was about 5′10″, but she weighed 300 pounds and not an ounce less, according to his story.

She started into her routine, and talked and talked, but John couldn’t hear anything. His mind kept asking him, “Why are the two people I have seen in this nutrition clinic so fat?”

The nutritionist got to the part where she was displaying plastic food to show John about correct portion sizes, but John could not keep silent. Finally he blurted out, “If you know so much about nutrition and the rules of dieting, why are you so overweight?”

The nutritionist stopped talking and looked stunned. Finally she said, as if she had not heard him, “What did you just say?”

So he repeated what he said, “If you know all the rules about dieting, why are you so fat?”

At this point the nutritionist flew off the handle, and started screaming at him, telling him to get out of her office immediately. He obliged, but didn’t think his question was out of line. The receptionist asked him if there was a problem, on his way out, and he said that someone apparently couldn’t handle her own advice.

John went back to see his family practitioner and told her what had happened. His doctor turned red and tried to hold back, but after a moment she just burst out laughing.

After that, John was told of some rules that he really had to pay attention to.

I recommend, as John’s doctor does, supplementation with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, especially for patients with Type II diabetes. Diabetes really ups the risk for cardiac issues, and although John does not have heart problems right now, his risk level is high. The pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is useful in the treatment of diabetes because it can help control lipid levels, particularly triglyceride levels. These levels are often elevated in patients with diabetes.

pharmaceutical grade fish oil is useful in treating other problems as well. It has been shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and some types of cancers, and has been linked to mood improvement and good joint health.

Mood improvement is so important for Type II diabetes patients, who have a high risk of depression caused by the diabetes.

My friend John was right to question the nutritionist. It would be the same situation as getting advice from a pulmonologist who smoked.

Nutritionists need to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

John told me she had two cases of Diet Coke on a shelf behind her, too (more fat people drink Diet Coke, than any other beverage.)

Don’t hesitate to get another opinion, especially in a situation like this, where you have reason to doubt the validity of what your practitioner is telling you, based on his or her own habits.

Pregnancy Body Pillows

Find out what different types of pregnancy pillows there are. Based on your style of sleep, discover which pregnancy pillow may be best for you - a wedge pillow or body pregnancy pillow.

Once most women hit their third trimester, they usually begin to have some discomfort when it’s time to try and get some sleep. Some women even begin to experience sleep difficulties as early as their second trimester. If you are finding it uncomfortable to sleep at night, you may find comfort and support in just tucking a few extra pillows under your belly, back or in-between your legs. But, this may only work in the beginning of your pregnancy, or it may not work at all.

If you can’t find a comfortable position or the right support for your growing belly, like many other pregnant women, and are having a hard time getting a good nights sleep, it’s probably time to upgrade to a pregnancy pillow.

Most of the pregnancy pillows you will come across online are body pillows, but there are also wedge pillows. There is a wide variety of pregnancy body pillows available to you, so how do you decide which is the best pregnancy pillow?

To begin with, they are not exactly cheap, and you don’t want to buy one and then not like it or find it uncomfortable. By not cheap I mean most cost at least $50, on average. But that’s really a small price to pay for comfort. You will usually find comfort in at least one of the different kinds of pregnancy pillows available and can also get more long term use out of the pillow other than just from your pregnancy.

Next, You will need to think about what positions you are most comfortable in when you sleep when you are deciding on the best pregnancy pillow. While pregnant, it is recommended that you sleep on your left side because it increases the flow of blood to the baby. This is not always going to happen, especially in the earlier stages of pregnancy. For example, you may love sleeping on your back, but as your belly grows, you may find sleeping on the right side is just more comfortable.

Finally, You should consider your style of sleep and what positions are most comfortable to you when trying to find the best pregnancy pillow. If you routinely sleep on your side, a wedge pillow may do wonders. But, if you prefer to sleep on your back, sides, or stomach (which of course is basically impossible while pregnant), a body pillow may be your best option because it provides the most comfort and support. Once you’ve found the pregnancy pillow you love, be sure to try your best to get enough rest because once that new baby comes, sleep will quickly become a thing of the past!

Getting Healthy

Many people would like to take steps to become more healthy. The road to good health is long, but only requires a commitment to stay between the lines. We will discuss a few paths on the road to good health in this article.

The first thing I tell people is to write down all your bad habits, smoking, drinking, laziness, nightly ice cream or eating junk food and sodas. Because recognizing the habit is the first step to breaking a habit. Then pick one or 2 at a time to work on.

Second, I tell them to engrave this little tid bit of information in their heads “it takes about 6 months to make or break a habit.” What this means is you must be consistent and patient. Making a new habit or breaking an old one does not happen over night!

Ok, so now let’s talk about healthy habits. Making an effort to eat healthier is a conscious effort of awareness. Just becoming aware of what you eat and how it processes and effects your body and knowing what you need to eat is key to eating better.

One of the most obvious ways to start down the path of good health is getting in shape. Many recommend exercising at least 3 days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. But making small daily changes in your routine can make a difference. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or park in the last parking spot and walk.

Stress can effect our efforts of becoming healthy, so it is important to know how to handle stress. We can hide from it, we all face it now and then. You must learn ways to cope so that it does not effect you negatively.

Some people may need medication, but most can use some simple relaxation methods. Everyone should try to have at least 30 minutes a day for simple relaxation. It could be a soak in the tub, sitting on the porch listening to nature, a yoga class or meditation.

Also, everyone should have a way of relieving daily stress. Maybe squeezing a stress ball, exercising or taken up a craft. Relieving stress and learning to relax a essential part of getting and staying healthy. Excessive stress can weaken our immune systems. Last but not least be sure and get your annual physical. If you are planning on becoming pregnant soo, always consult with your doctor before changing your eating habits or exercising!

Diabetes Prevention

There are ways to prevent getting diabetes. If you think you are at risk the first thing you should do though is talk to your doctor. You can also take a diabetes screening test online that can tell you if you are at risk.

There are often signs and symptoms of type two diabetes before you actually develop the disease, this is known as pre-diabetes. Before you have fully developed diabetes you are likely to have increased, blood sugar levels and these can be an indicator that you are in a pre diabetes state. The good news is that the condition does not have to be permanent or turn into full-blown diabetes.Diabetes preventions include: Change in diet, Increased exercise levels, Medication, Relaxation, and Diet Changes.

One of the reasons that many people are getting diabetes is because of the terrible american diets. They are high in sugar and carbohydrates and high levels of carbs turn into sugar. The pancreas then has to work a lot harder to create the necessary insulin to deal with the sugar. Additionally, the poor eating habits can cause obesity and it is a leading factor of diabetes.

Some recent research is also pointing to a link between obesity and type two diabetes. In a study done at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine it was found that obese mice had an over abundance of a hormone called resitin. These same mice were unable to transport glucose efficiently. When given a drug to lower the resistance, the mice resumed their glucose transportation. These drugs are not available as of yet and human testing is still some time in the future. That does not mean that there is not another way to combat increasing resistans. Exercise is the magic bullet that for many has turned back the tide of diabetes.

The body burns more glucose when it is active. Exercising will cause your blood sugar levels to lower and will also help you to lose weight. Thirty minutes a day walking is a great way to begin. Exercising is a diabetes prevention.

If your condition is extreme, what doctors call boarder line diabetic, your physician may want to start you on medications that will reduce your insulin resistance. These are prescribed on a case-by-case basis and what is prescribed will depend on your symptoms. If you are not producing insulin, you may need to take an oral medication. If the problem is in your sugar production, other medications address the issue. Talk with your doctor about all the options.

Newborn Photography

The demand for specialist professional baby photographers has increased as people realize the importance of documenting their familys lives pictorially. Not just the importance, but the sentimentality of being able to look back on the special moments in their lives and treasure them forever.

More and more people are realizing that baby and toddler photos are invaluable for sentimental reasons and to also document the rapid growth of the child. The child will grow up, but the photos will last forever.

Professional photographers who have a great reputation can avail themselves of the opportunity for a life time of work. Many parents are documenting their child’s life journey before they even enter the world with tasteful pregnancy shots. Grandparents are also becoming a greater portion of the market.

Professional photographers capture everything from everyday naughtiness to the total innocence of a newborn child ” the rewards are there. No matter how frustrating working children may be. But, you do need the right equipment ” a good DSLR, flash equipment, and a tripod ” to start with. Because without the right equipment you dont have a hope of coming across as a professional photographer let alone be capable of producing the results clients expect.

However to create those fantastic photos you will need to have the correct equipment. At the very least, a quality DSLR, tripod, flash, and shutter release. Without these, you will have a remote chance of snapping the level of shots the client is expecting, and it will be difficult for the parents to take you seriously if you do not present with the expected photographic equipment.

Baby photography is difficult in that you cannot instruct an infant or toddler how to pose or to stay still. They are not old enough. Having the right attitude helps. So, make them feel comfortable with you ” get down to their level and play with them (but be ready to get that fantastic shot). This is where your remote shutter release and tripod will come in handy ” it gives instant results with no camera shake.

The photo shoots should be lighthearted, relaxed, and fun. Children are very perceptive to tension and will not provide that winning smile if they sense discomfort. Try and think like a kid for the session and remember what was fun when you were small. This will get you much better results. Get the child’s attention by coming down to their level. Have the parents provide a couple of favorite toys as an ice breaker. Make sure you have your finger ready to press that shutter release while your are engaging the child. This is where the lightning reflexes and patience will be rewarded with the stunning photo.

Professional photographers are specialists that have experience, knowledge, creativity and the guts to create photos that are everlasting.

Breastfeeding Diet

April 28, 2009 by Samantha Jackson

The food you eat when you breastfeed will directly affect the milk your baby is getting from you. Whether you choose to feed from the breast or pump with a ameda breast pump, medela breast pump or an avent duo pump doesnt matter when it comes to diet. Although there isnt a list of foods a nursing mom should eat, there are guidelines to abide by during these crucial first months of your babys development.

Fortunately, breast-feeding women do not have to consume special diets in order to provide the best nutrients for their baby. Breast-feeding women need to provide additional calories in their daily diet. To offset the strain of breast-feeding on their body. Additionally, some breast-feeding women believe that they need to consume or force extra fluids when they are nursing. However, this is not true, and is been shown that extra water may actually hurt the milk supply.

There are rewards to eating well. Studies suggest that consuming organic meat and dairy products will boost the beneficial fatty acids in breast milk. Additionally, mothers who consume fish can also pass the benefits that fish provide to the baby is well. It is recommended to avoid fish that are high in mercury content in such a short fish, shark and king mackerel just to name a few. Nursing mothers who have started eating oatmeal regularly, report noticing an increase in their milk supply.

Breast-feeding often wonder about allergies. Mothers do not have to remove allergy foods from their diet but if there’s a family history of severe allergies they should consult their doctor about cutting these foods out during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. It is advisable to monitor your baby for any possible reactions. If you suspect you have eaten something that has upset their stomach take the time to figure out what new food you introduced into your diet. Assuming the reaction is not severe try eating the food/s again. If your baby becomes upset or reactionary cut this food out of your diet for some time and reintroduce later.

There is a myth that states if a food makes you gassy, your baby will be gassy. Things like beans, onions and broccoli do not make babies have gas. These findings are based on research conducted. Moms should not hinder themselves from eating such foods. They should eat the foods they love as long as they are rich in vitamins and protein. For those who still find concern with consuming gassy foods you can always pump and dump with an ameda breast pump, medela breast pump or an avent duo pump.

Some moms may want to avoid some foods and beverages. For example pineapple, organs, tomatoes, lemon and grapefruit may cause a skin reaction in the baby. If a mom chooses to consume caffeine, the baby should be closely watched for any possible reactions.

Remember there are also additional things that may affect breast milk. Smoking for one can affect breast milk but breast-feeding and smoking is better than smoking and formula-feeding, but quitting smoking should be a mothers goal. Women may also have an alcoholic drink in modesty but if there is a question as to the possible that too much has been consumed either a home test kit for alcohol in breast milk or waiting for a hour or so should ease a breast-feeding mothers mind. Taking care to listen to the baby is ultimately the best indicator of what breast-feeding mothers should or should not eat and when in doubt consult a doctor.

Cord Blood Donations Used To Collect Stem Cells

April 28, 2009 by Les

Umbilical cord blood donations do not use the mother’s blood, they use the baby’s blood that is left in the umbilical cord after birth. The cord blood is full of stem cells that the scientific community has pounced on.Why? Those stem cells are the basic building blocks of life.

Stem cell technology is being trialled on people with spinal cord damage and various cancers such as leukemia. One day they hope to be able to take stem cells and grow new organs like a liver or heart. The best stem cells to use are those taken from a new born baby’s umbilical cord. This is why umbilical cord blood donations are important

A syringe is generally used to collect donated cord blood after the cord has been cut. Some midwives simply squeeze the blood from the cord. Collecting donated cord blood is better than just throwing the umbilical cord and the umbilical cord blood out. After collection, the donated cord blood is stored and then sent away to have the stem cells harvested.

You have two options for cord blood collection. You can donate the cord blood where it is stored and used for research or treatment. The most common treatment juvenile leukemia where it has a high success rate.

The second option is to have the cord blood stem cells ‘banked’ for possible future use by your family, and in particular, your baby. There is nothing purer than the baby’s own cord blood stem cells if he or she should become sick. Collection will cost around $2000 with an annual fee of around $100. If your child should ever become sick, this will be small price to pay to save their life.

Research is being undertaken to test stem cells and their ability to repair spinal problems and restore movement to para/quadriplegics. More than seventy diseases can be treated using stem cells many of them being cured in the long term. The lack of umbilical cord blood donations is creating problems with one in five hundred births donating cord blood - the remaining four hundred and ninety-nine births are having their cords and the cord blood thrown out.

The best thing you can do to help increase in the amount of cord blood collected is to use the service and donate cord blood. If you are pregnant, ask the hospital or midwife if they collect cord blood. If not, there are many agencies that will collect it, either for public cord blood banking, or, if you are prepared to pay the price, your own personal cord blood banking. If friends or relatives are pregnant, get them to inquire about the process.

If more parents donate cord blood for research, science will find cures for diseases such as juvenile diabetes, brain injuries and spinal column injuries a lot sooner. Cord blood donations may be the future of our children’s health.
