Baby Bedding Sets - A Suffocation Hazard For Your Child?

June 30, 2009 by Bee Fraley

If you purchase a baby bedding set in preparation for the arrival of your baby, you will find that included items like comforters aren’t needed in the beginning.

There’s also a big controversy going on when it comes to the use of bumpers. In the end it comes down to what you feel is the right choice.

Thinner bumpers are safer than the big fluffy ones that can be a suffocation hazard for your baby. It’s best to remove the bumpers once your baby can stand and climb.

To avoid suffocation, all your baby really needs in the first 12 months is a sheet, mattress, and a crib skirt for aesthetics. Avoid anything fluffy and heavy in your baby’s crib.

If you want to make sure your baby is comfortably warm, consider getting an organic blanket for swaddling or an organic cotton sleep sac that also wraps up snugly around your baby and doesn’t present a suffocation hazard.

So, what do you do with the comforter or quilt that came in the baby bedding set? They make great accessories for your baby’s nursery.

You can hang the quilt over a rack designed for it, or simply mount it on the wall.

It’s also a good idea to purchase a complete baby bedding set, if you are planning on using it throughout your child’s toddler years as well. It would be difficult finding the matching pieces at a later time.

Or you can just keep it simple in the beginning and transform your child’s room throughout the years just by purchasing a new bedding set.

Photographs are obviously the best way to preserve memories and to capture the most special moments in your life. So you certainly would not want to skimp out on the most important 9 months of most women’s lives.

It is not necessary to spend the money or take the time to go to a professional studio if you do not want to. Beautiful pictures can be taken at home and they will be just as memorable. You can make your own background by tacking sheets in front of a window. The natural light shining through the sheet creates a professional look. A white backdrop with the expectant mother wearing white maternity t shirts make for a very dramatic black and white photograph. This can be a very artistic and beautiful shot.

The purpose of maternity photographs is to show off your pregnant belly. So do not wear baggy clothing! You have to wear a maternity t shirt or other top that will hug your belly and show off the pregnancy process!

So what are you going to do with your pregnancy pictures? One thing you can do is hang one in your babies room for your child. Another fun thing to do is to include a pregnancy shot in the baby shower invitations.

Fathers are obviously another important part of pregnancy and should be included in some of the maternity pictures. Just the act of taking these photos will be fond memories for any parent. Of course, if circumstances will not allow for this, you can always crop George Clooney into you picture!

Sunscreen: a must have item this summer

As the temperature rises, swimming suits and shorts come out of the closet, flip flops get dusted off, and all thoughts of winter are left behind. Summertime means yards work outside, days at the beach, and outside fun with the family. However, the intense summer sun can cause skin damage and cancer, so using sunscreen is a daily necessity, especially during all those outside activities.

The purpose of a sunscreen is to block the harmful UVA and UVB radiation from the sun. This radiation damages all skin types, from those who are fair to those who have a dark complexion or tan easily. In fact, a reliable sunscreen is necessary even on a cloudy day because the cloud layer does not block this radiation. All sunscreens carry a Sun Protection Factor or SPF. The SPF rating shows how the product performs in protecting against UVB radiation. Wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 daily will help prevent the sun’s damaging effects. It is recommended to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. During the summer most people flock to the beaches, so some sunscreens are designed to be water-proof or sweat-proof.

Most of the sunscreens available on the market block damaging radiation through a concoction of different chemical ingredients. These products are normally in the forms of creams or sprays. Once sunscreen is applied onto the skin, the chemicals work to both reflect and scatter the radiation, or absorb it. In recent years, there have been many questions raised about the safety and effectiveness of these chemicals. Some scientists claim these chemicals produce free radicals, which actually increase skin damage and the risk of skin cancer, rather than lowering it. Another concern is that these synthetic chemicals may accumulate in the human body, and can actually reach the blood stream by being absorbed through the skin. Since the goal of using a sunscreen is to protect the body, and not harm it, many consumers have turned to using organic sunscreen to protect their families.

Organic sunscreens, like Weleda, use a combination of naturally occurring herbs, plant proteins, and minerals to provide sun protection. Some organic sunscreens are infused with vitamins to benefit your skin. Different types of organic sunscreens are available including creams, sprays, and powders which all carry appropriate SPF ratings. Organic powder sunscreens are mineral based, and are perfect for everyday protection. Minerals commonly found in organic sunscreen are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. One advantage of choosing the organic sunscreens over the chemical ones is they reduce the risk of skin irritation. Those with sensitive skin will especially benefit from the skin soothing properties of organic ingredients.

Before you hit the beach this summer it is imperative you remember to apply a quality sunscreen. The varieties of organic and chemical based sunscreens are endless. Choose a sunscreen that is good for your skin, has an appropriate SPF rating, and is designed for your activity. Using this must have item now, will benefit your skin for years to come.

Parents love two Hawaiian types of baby bedding.

Is Your Nursery Bedding Set Risky?

June 27, 2009 by Dorothea Frankson

Reports say that at least 15 % of the over 6000 deaths due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) are caused by infants sleeping on soft baby crib bedding. So how can you be sure that any bedding bought for your baby will be safe?

There is a risk of the infant suffocating if soft bedding is used. Especially if the head sinks into the bedding. You may think a soft mattress is more comfortable for your little one, but if it is too soft, it may not be safe. To avoid fatal accidents when the baby is sleeping, there should be someone always nearby to keep an eye on the position of the baby’s head. When the baby’s head is placed on the soft mattress, they may not have enough strength to come back in a good position.

Parents can prevent suffocation by ensuring that their baby has a firm mattress to sleep on. The strenght of the mattress can be assessed by pressing one hand against the mattress with the resisting force. This is a simple way to assess a mattress. The more resistant a mattress, the safer it is.

Bumper pads in the crib are another cause of suffocation. While attractive and cute, infants’ faces may be pressed against the soft pads, causing suffocations when baby is unable to free himself.

The parent should take more precaution and care to the infant because infant may be weak and vulnurable during this period. Buy firm bumper pads because there are rare cases of strangulation from bumper pads that have strings, or suffocation from bumper pads that yield to heavier objects.

According to some research, mattress contains some toxic gases which may be harmful to baby’s health. Some researchers have found that phosphorus and arsenic which are generally used as fire retardants, are added to mattresses which can be very harmful. These chemicals can react with others and release poisonous gases; if an infant breathes too much of these, he can die while sleeping in his crib.

It’s ironic but the fungus sometimes found in a baby’s bedding, that we thought is harmful, is actually the one helping to release poisonous gases according to some findings. Parents are thus urged not to use old nursery and crib bedding which has been used before, as it may contain fungus after a long period of time. To avoid fungus, parents should not reuse bedding in an infants crib, even though infants only sleep on it for a short period of time. Instead, parents should buy new bedding. Added to that, rather than an old used nursery bedding, a new one looks much beautiful.

Taking into account all these different things, moms and dads should be able to decide if the baby’s bedding is safe. To avoid sleepless nights, parents should just choose safe beddings for their babies, it will not only relieve them of their worries but will also let the baby enjoy his/her slumber.

Low-Priced Baby Bedding Sets Can Be Innoxious and Pleasant

June 26, 2009 by Dorothea Frankson

First time parents always ask the question, “What bedding will keep my child safe and comfortable?”

Newborn babies need lots of attention and care. Newborn baby skin is thin and extremely prone to rashes, so care must be taken to pick out fabrics that are soft and not abrasive to baby’s skin. It is important and wise to purchase the most comfortable bedding for your baby, not the most expensive, but the bedding that will help your child sleep sound. The baby’s age should be used in choosing appropriate fabrics. Baby linens, as well as clothes for newly born babies both need to be made using only cotton as the comfort of the baby is of the utmost importance and all other concerns, such as cost and appearance, must be secondary. It must be remembered that just because a product is 100% cotton doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe.

There are harmful chemicals and other ingredients processed into commercially grown cotton. Organic bedding and clothing is best due to how vulnerable the baby’s skin is to infections and irritants. When a baby’s health is a risk, not many people would take issue in selecting bedding that’s a bit more expensive.

Currently, mothers, fathers, and infants are more fortunate now than their former peers were a long time ago because in the past, there weren’t any pre-built crib sets. Parents can select safe bedding in various sizes colors and materials to give their baby’s room a creative and unique look. Soft and safe doesn’t have to mean plain looking crib bedding. Even on a budget there are so many options from different brands to choose from when buying bedding for your infant. Though the inexpensive bedding may not cost a lot, if you find any that is made of 100% cotton it is priceless to your baby’s well being.

Baby bedding manufacturers have kept pace with today’s creative plans for their babies’ nurseries. Nurseries now have different patterns and shaped and styles compared to back in the days when they were just white or blue and pink. There are endless, comfortable possibilities of styles and design options for bedding for your baby’s nursery.

Always be on the look out for sales and lower prices when looking for baby bedding on a budget. You can always find something that fits with your pocketbook if you are patient when shopping around. These articles are available in sets or as separates, however, sets come matched and ready to go. Baby Bedding sets contains all the things needed to fit your baby crib; they sometimes come with little accessories. As many pediatricians recommend that comforters or bumper pads not be used, you may prefer to purchase your desired bedding items as separates instead of in a set.

Consider how long you will need to use the baby bedding. Babies outgrow cribs so quickly so forgoing a fancy nursery can allow a splurge a little later down the road. When buying baby items, it is imperative that you buy the best for your baby. It is cost effective to buy neutral colors for bedding, so it can be used for any future children you may have.

It also includes a patchwork quilt worked in subtle colors of light greens, blues, tans, and browns.

A western theme can partner with a cowboy theme. Complete with denim ties that are topstitched like jeans, the Bronco Billy by Bebe Chic is a great example. Inspired by cowboys on the range, Buck-A-Roo is an excellent cowboy themed crib set. Picture wagon trains and horses around your little cowboy. How to Conceive a Baby Boy - 3 Tips To Conceiving a Boy Naturally

June 24, 2009 by Joseph Alford

Today, there are many things a couple can do to select the gender of their child. The benefit of going through natural methods to conceive a boy is that you do not have to go through costly medical procedures such as artificial insemination. The following 3 methods are perfectly natural which can be implemented right away to significantly increase your chances of conceiving a boy.

1. Timing of intercourse is crucial exactly on the day of ovulation

The best method to conceive a boy naturally is to conceive on the day of ovulation. This helps create an environment that gives the sperm responsible for conceiving a boy a better advantage. The use of an ovulation prediction kit is strongly recommended to better determine when ovulation will occur. Most ovulation kits that use the saliva are generally more accurate.

2. Keep alkaline levels of the reproductive environment high

The sperm carrying the male gene cannot survive for very long in acidic environments so making the reproductive environment more alkaline will help to increase the likelihood of conceiving a boy. This can be done by making the woman orgasm and also by altering the diet to include foods high in potassium and sodium. Be sure to eat foods such as apples, bananas and potatoes as these help to increase alkaline levels.

3. Aim for sexual positions that encourage deep penetration

Sexual position matters a great deal as the cervix is naturally more alkaline than the entrance which gives a better advantage to the male sperm. In order to deposit the sperm closer to the cervix, the recommended sexual position is for the man to enter in the woman from behind.

In learning how to conceive a baby boy, going through medical treatments can prove extremely expensive. Fortunately, there are natural ways to increasing your chances by timing intercourse correctly, increasing alkaline levels and aiming for deeper penetration during intercourse. Even if you end up giving birth to a baby girl, you will still grow to love them just as much.

Benefits Of Purchasing Organic Baby Bedding For Your Baby

June 24, 2009 by Bee Fraley

If you are worried about your baby’s thin skin absorbing the pesticides and fertilizers that can be found in non-organic baby bedding, you will want to purchase nursery bedding that is made from organic cotton.

Even after conventional cotton is harvested, the baby bedding manufacturers use chlorine bleach and toxic dyes to achieve bright whites are varies colors, while organic baby bedding manufacturers use only non-toxic coloring agents.

In organic comforters, bumpers and pillows, not only the outer shell is organic, but also the stuffing made from organic cotton or organic sheep wool. The sheep wool provides resistance to the growth of bacteria and dust mites.

Organic wool comes from sheep that are raised organically. These sheep are moved around to prevent overgrazing which could make the farm land infertile.

Organic wool doesn’t have to be treated with chemicals to fireproove it, because it is naturally flame retardant. Without those harsh chemicals in the wool, the bedding ends up being so much softer than when conventional wool is used.

You can contribute to the green revolution by purchasing 100% organic cotton bedding for your baby and reap the benefits of it being softer and more durable at the same time. Yes, purchasing organic will increase your expense considerably, but you can always get started with just a couple of sheets and a blanket, while still purchasing regular crib skirts and bumpers.

The earth and your own body will thank you for making the choice to buy organic. Did you know that 90% of the pesticides used in cotton farming end up in the soil, water, and the air? From there it’s not long before they end up in your own body.

Purchasing organic baby bedding sets is becoming easier as more manufacturers provide organic bedding in a variety of designs. So you are sure to find the bedding set that will match your taste and nursery decoration. Whether you like solid whites or cream colors, or are interested in print designs, you will find something to fit your needs.
