“When am I actually in labor?”, Is one of the most common questions women ask. This is often hard to tell and needs to be diagnosed on a case to case basis. Everybody goes through labor in their own way and some women have more obvious signs than others.
Most women will find that there is a release of pressure in their diaphragms due to the fact that the baby moves from the upper stomach down to the pelvic region. There will be a slight change of shape in her stomach as this happens.
Often times, when their waters break women may sometimes get confused between going into labor and urinating. The difference here is that the fluid that is excreted does not smell anything like urine and has either a clear color or one with a pink tint. The liquid actually comes from the amniotic sac which has just ruptured.
When getting closer to labor, you will start to experience short cramps that will feel like period pains. These are your contractions and they will happen in periodic intervals. The cramps will begin with a short contractions and will lengthen in time as you get closer to delivering your baby.
Finally, to know that you are truly in labor, you will see a thick mucus discharge that looks like a bloodstained blob called it the “show”. This blob is actually a plug that seals off your cervix during the pregnancy term.
In most cases if you think that labor has really begun, the best thing to do is to call your midwife or general practitioner for instructions. Many women can go through a couple of false alarms during maternity, and this is quite normal. Your doctor will know better whether you are truly in labor or not.
Since the prospect of a pending labor can bring about tons of nervous excitement, it is best you and your family get prepared. So starting right now, prepare a list of useful phone numbers and placed them next to every phone in your household so you don’t have to scramble through the phone book to minute your contractions start.
