It is more common for a woman to have a yeast infection during pregnancy than when she is not pregnant. The symptoms of this condition are the same as when a woman is not pregnant. This condition can cause discomfort, irritation and pain.
An overgrowth of the Candida fungus in the vagina causes this condition. Candida thrives in environments that are moist and warm. It is a common problem for pregnant women because they are experiencing many hormonal changes. It is particularly common in women that have gestational diabetes due to their high blood sugar levels.
There are some common symptoms that women have when they are experiencing this condition. Very often women will have some discharge. Some women have more discharge than others. Usually, this discharge is white but it can also appear yellow or green. Many times the discharge can look like cottage cheese. Other common symptoms include itchiness, redness and pain or burning when urinating or during intercourse.
Typically, this condition is treated with an anti fungal medication that is taken orally. This medication is not approved for pregnant women to use, however. Pregnant women can use suppositories or creams to help fight these infections. Unfortunately, this method takes longer to clear up the symptoms. They may also consider trying natural remedies that are not harmful to the fetus. A gynecologist or obstetrician should be consulted to verify approved treatments for pregnant women.
It is a good idea to take preventative measures when it come to this condition. Loose fitting clothing and underwear should be worn. These items should be made from natural fibers instead of synthetic fibers. Natural fibers allow the skin to breathe and stay cool and dry. Deodorants and perfumes should be avoided as should any feminine product that contains any perfumes. Eating foods low in sugar and drinking plenty of water may also help.
Left untreated, this condition can be passed from mother to child. When the woman is giving birth, the infant may be exposed to the fungus and develop a condition known as thrush. Thrush is the term used to describe candida infections of the mouth. Thrush is not dangerous to a baby’s heath, but it can be uncomfortable for them. Medications can be used to treat thrush and it also sometimes clears up on its own.
A yeast infection during pregnancy is a common thing. You should always consult your doctor when you have any health concerns or before starting any treatment.
