Coping With Morning Sickness With Young Children in the Home

February 6, 2010   Filed under pregnancy

Coping with morning sickness is difficult to deal with on its own, but when you also have small children in your home, it can be even more difficult. In order to make it through this time, you will have to discover some ways to keep your kids busy so that you can get rest that you need to feel better.

Not only does morning sickness make you feel poorly, but you’re probably also struggling with a wide range of emotions and fatigue. All of these things can make dealing with your young children a challenge. Accept the fact that these are normal feelings for a pregnant woman and that they will come to pass.

If you absolutely must lay down for awhile, just make sure that your children are nearby. For example, if you want to lay down on your bed, clear a spot for them on the floor in your bedroom so that they can play. Or, if it’s easier for them to play in the family room, take a quick nap in a recliner. For very young children, it’s probably best to go into their bedroom and rest on the floor in order to shut the door and keep them contained.

Next, you’ll need to pick some activities for them to do that can keep them occupied for at least 15 minutes. Some great choices are:

Puzzles – The more pieces the better, but make sure it’s not too difficult for them to put together.

Coloring Books – Buy several along with a small pack of crayons.

Play-Doh – One of the messier choices, but it’s a great choice for keeping them busy for awhile.

Cars – A bucket full of cars on the floor can keep them busy for awhile.

Books – If possible, try reading to them. If you just don’t have the energy, let them pretend to read the books to you.

Movies – Rent some family movies and have them sit and watch them. That should give you enough time to relax for a little bit.

Even though coping with morning sickness can be more difficult when you have small children, activities can help to keep them busy. Just remember to keep them near you and as safe as possilbe in the event that you fall asleep. If all else fails, see if you can find someone to take them for a little while so you can catch a little nap.
