Depression During Pregnancy

Do you feel like you are on the roller coaster of emotions during pregnancy? Few minutes of happy thoughts and after a second a move towards the dark and deep depression cave. 14 percent and 23 percent of pregnant women will experience depressive symptoms while pregnant and it is a well known fact that depression is common during pregnancy.

In 2003, approximately 13 percent of women took an antidepressant at some time during their pregnancy. Dr. Kimberly Ann Yonkers, one of the lead authors from Yale University said “Depression in pregnant women often goes unrecognized and untreated in part because of concerns about the safety of treating women during pregnancy.”

Infants born to women with depression have increased risk for irritability, less activity and attentiveness, and fewer facial expressions compared with those born to mothers without depression. Both depression symptoms and the use of antidepressant medications during pregnancy have been associated with negative consequences for the newborn.

Depression and its symptoms to a very large extend are also associated with fetal growth change and shorter gestation periods. And while available research still leaves a lot of questions unanswered, some studies have linked fetal malformations, cardiac defects, pulmonary hypertension, and reduced birth weight to antidepressant use during pregnancy.

The main problem is that identifying depression in pregnant women can be pretty much difficult as its symptoms mimic those associated with pregnancy, such as changes in mood, energy level, appetite, and cognition. Depressed women are more likely to have poor prenatal care and pregnancy complications, such as nausea, vomiting, and preeclampsia, and to use drugs, alcohol, and nicotine.

Two main hormones, estrogen and progesterone cause mood swings during pregnancy. Emotions are always unstable and feeling of depression is normal as any other body changes during pregnancy. She may move from great joy to deep despair within fraction of time. A pregnant woman may feel tearful with little cause or no cause at all. She may even find hard to express the reason of joy or despair. This is no psychological problem but; a clear picture of hormonal changes.

Mood Swings are most common during the first trimester that is between 6 weeks to 10 weeks of pregnancy. However the fluctuation resides during the second trimester. This is the period when she first feels the baby move. The feeling is great so is her emotions.

The third trimester is the most anxious one. This is the period when she worries about everything and anything that she can think of. However her major cause of anxiety lies not just on the labour and delivery process but also in baby care and parenting in general. She will feel physically uncomfortable with the growth of the abdomen and will feel irritated with the lightest noise as she lacks sleep in general. It may be more extreme if she is single without a partner. The hard-core fact of being a single mother can make her feel stressed and isolated. Pregnancy is the important period of any women’s life. It is during this time she is very vulnerable both, physically and mentally. One should try help a pregnant women. Believe me, even if she doesn’t ask for help, she indeed is in need of it.

Breaking your Smoking Habit

One of the hardest things to do in life is to quit smoking. The habit of smoking itself is often cited by most people as being the hardest part. Try replacing your smoking habit with a much healthier habit to aid in quitting smoking for good. Also, it’s important to remember that it will take time to get use to your new healthy habit just as it took time for you to get use to smoking.

If you are determined to quit smoking, you have made an impressive start. However, if you have decided to quit on your own, you are doing even better. Sounds strange does it? You would be surprised at just how many people decide to quit smoking by being informed by their doctor, spouse, parent, sibling or friend that they will be quitting. In order to successfully quit smoking for good you need to decide for yourself to quit. If you have actually made this decision on your own, you are doing an amazing job. If you are letting someone push you into quitting you are just setting yourself up for headaches, hassles and complications that are easily avoided.

A developed pattern in the way one smokes is something every smoker has. If you start smoking a pack a day, this becomes one of your habits. Breaking your smoking habit wil be easier if you start out with small steps. Success wil come if you change your habits slowly. Instead of smoking your usual cigarette after a meal, try brushing your teeth. You may realize you like the fresh mouth over the cigarette tasting one and this soon becomes a healthy habit. Chew gum or suck on hard candy if you are not able to brush your teeth after a meal.

You might find yourself in circumstances that trigger cigarette cravings. Of course, it is best to try to avoid these situations but sometimes that is impossible. Try to have an alternative to smoking if you can. For example, if you smoke right after work, carpool with others that don’t smoke, take a different route home, stop at the store, or take the bus. Also if getting in your car triggers cravings, have it detailed to get the smoke smell out. Just try to do something different to help you forget your cravings and they will soon pass.

Often times you will find yourself in positions that will make breaking your smoking habit difficult. By having a way to deal with these unavoidable times, you will be one step closer to quitting. Two of the popular methods for this include nicotine gum and stop smoking sticks. The nicotine gum is beneficial in public places and can be discreet. The stop smoking sticks are basically pretend cigarettes that keep your hands busy. If you find these helpful, you may be smoking more just because your hands are bored. Give your hands something more productive to do and this may at least help some of your smoking issues.

Breaking your smoking habit is a difficult process. It is likely to take you anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months to be cigarette free. Try cutting back on how many cigarettes you smoke daily if quitting cold turkey seems impossible. But regardless which method you choose, it will take time and effort for it to work. It takes on average 2 weeks to get use to a new habit and just as long if not longer to quit a bad habit.

Successfully Stop Smoking n Four Steps

The fact that every smoker who wishes to quit smoking has to know is that breaking the habit would require a lot of personal dedication and determination. Additionally, you will encounter a lot of problems as you go along. Recognizing these potential problems and having a specific plan of how to solve them are important if you want to succeed in your efforts. Having an exact idea of how to approach the process of quitting will enable you to pick yourself up and not just readily stumble when you meet obstacles in your path.

Step 1. You need to devote a time to organize your plan of quitting smoking. This means looking for reasons which influence you to smoke and devising a plan by which you can conquer these influences. If you are addicted to smoking because of nicotine, then examine what products are you consuming which contains high level of it, then you would know how to curb your nicotine consumption. If you smoke because you are bored, then look for things that will keep you busy. However, if you smoke due to stress, better include in your plan stress-relief techniques.

Step 2. Get all the help you would need. Welcome help as they present to you such as the stop smoking aids available in the market, or the support and encouragement of your family and friends. If you have a problem of support, to begin with, then resolve these issues first. Like, when you are hard up on your budget and could not afford a nicotine gum. Save first for a couple of weeks. Once you have enough to buy, then start working on your goals.

Step 3. Monitor your progress. If you put your goals in writing, as well as the progress you are making in connection with your goals, you are making yourself accountable of the whole task. Like, if you decide to decrease your one pack a day habit to ten cigarette sticks a day, you should write down this new plan. This will make you see explicitly a new pattern of your smoking, and make you conscious of the sticks you have each day. You may find that as you track each of these cigarettes, you want to skip a few just so you would not anymore have to write it down. You have to be very honest though with yourself if you choose this method. Cheating on your log will not help you at all since the information you made is false.

Step 4. Celebrate your success. If you are able to manage a 24 hour period staying away from cigarettes, then celebrate. This does not have to be a big party in the neighbourhood for each time you meet a target but at least do something special. You might treat yourself to your favorite coffee or ice cream, or buy that book or purse you have been eyeing out. This will help you stay motivated on your plan. One day you can have that huge party or dream vacation, but only after you have successfully quit smoking for a longer period of time, say a year. This will give you a strong motivation to continue on your goal and the big savings that you got from skipping cigarettes can well afford you that trip or party.

Make sure that you follow each step wholeheartedly, and in no time, you are guaranteed to be able to join the league of those who become non-smokers in the world. Taking advantage of the help that is in your environment as well as making yourself accountable would head you to the right direction. You should also be specific of your expectation of yourself because this will help you be able to anticipate problems before they even appear. Simply waiting until problems come out is expecting a disaster. You owe it to yourself to be free from this habit. These suggestions would surely get you there in the soonest time.

Electronic Cigarettes – The Hottest Smoking Sensation

May 6, 2009 by John Thompson

e-Cigarettes are arousing interest and speculation of plenty of people all over ready to give up their addiction to normal cigarettes. Compared to normal cigarettes, the expense of these devices may appear lofty, but the potential for long-term savings far outweigh the price of continuing without them. A part of their attraction is that they perform and look just like a traditional cigarette. When the e-cigarette is activated, the LED tip lights up and a smoke-like vapor is created that isn’t a source of air pollution the same way as a regular cigarette. That permits e-cigarettes to be made use of in no smoking areas. That also means we may be observing a revolution in the way we view smoking with these inventive electronic alternatives.

This is a somewhat new sort of smoking. It was started by a Chinese company in 2004, and has been gaining preference ever since. Exact sales figures are difficult to pin down, but just one of the most popular companies making electronic cigarettes out there asserts that more than 300,000 were sold in 2008. These kinds of figures show us that a large number of people are choosing to give up regular cigarettes. Sales are spiking exponentially as more and more smokers realize that electronic cigarettes can transform the way they smoke. The e-cigarettes have even been listed in the Top Ten Health Trends of 2008. But the query on every smoker’s mind is, are they really better for you than plain old tobacco cigs?

eCigs are tobacco free but do have the same physical appearance of a traditional cig ” a 100 wide to be accurate. The rechargeable lithium battery does make the unit a bit heavier but otherwise they could easily be mistaken for a tobacco cigarette. They contain only 2 main ingredients ” nicotine and propylene glycol (PG). You have probably been using PG for several years in some or most of your personal care products. PG is also the main ingredient in the liquid used in smoke machines. A computer chip in the battery of the e-cig notices when a user pulls air through the device and turns on the red LED tip, simulating a flare. This then also kicks on the heating coil, referred to as the atomizer, and vaporizes the PG/nicotine cartridge. The result is a nicotine-filled vapor which closely simulates real smoke. Even the most seasoned smokers agree the entire process is as similar to a traditional cigarette as possible.

Cartridges are usually available in varying nicotine strengths ” most commonly zero, low, medium and high. Compared to standard cigs, a high cartridge contains approximately an identical quantity of nicotine per puff . The life expectancy of an e-cigarette cartridge however far out-pulls its tobacco alternative however, producing around 300 puffs, compared to fifteen. The understandable benefit to having the optional strengths is that you allow yourself to have control of your nicotine intake.

What about all the cancer causing agents, dangers to your health, and over 4,000 other deadly chemicals unleashed by a burning cigarette? If they were listed on the box of an e-cig, they would all be followed by (not included). You heard it right. Since there is no flame, there is no real smoke, so there is also far less risk related to your health . The same holds true for second hand smoke. The danger to your health is similar to that of nicotine gum, not nearly to that of smoking. The PG vapor clearly isnt deadly in the same way.

As far as quitting goes, there is no systematic proof that agrees or disagrees with it’s possibility. But, eventually tapering the concentration of nicotine in the cartridges might possibly aid you in ceasing because it will still feel like smoking a normal cigarette. Even if you wouldn’t like to quit, the electronic cigarette is a extremely lower health risk. The e-cig is not only a safer alternative choice as far as you health is concerned, but goes much easier on your wallet, In the long run e-cigarettes are much more cheap than traditional cigarettes. On top of that is the fact that e-cigs are completely harmless to use anywhere without making you or your things smell like smoke. E-cigarettes won’t yellow your teeth and are free of the long list of negative effects traditional cigarettes carry. All of this information seems to suggest the electronic cigarettes superiority to normal cigarettes in almost every single way.

If you think you may want to attempt a promising, new system of smoking, the e-cig may very well be what you have been looking for. The price is right, the benefits are clear, and the product is incredibly handy. e-cigarettes are being sold across the world, and sales are rising. Try the new e-cig, and see why so many smokers now prefer it to standard smoking.

Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome-Escape the Torture

Memories have a unique way of helping people. They can make you smile or laugh, you can look back on a memory and learn something new about yourself or someone else, sometimes they can make you cry. Though memories are not always happy, you can always learn something new. Often we wish we could relive certain memories everyday and enjoy them or sometimes we wish we could go back and change things. Changing a memory might seem impossible, but with today’s advancing science and other clinical practices, changing a memory does not seem so far fetched.

Think back for a moment, find a memory you would like to relive. Think about how you feel, how the memory makes you feel. Perhaps you want to change something in the memory, think about how this could change your life. Now imagine for a moment that this memory is a traumatic memory. You would be reliving this memory over and over again everyday. The memory will torment you and cause stress and anxiety in all aspects of your life. This is what people with post traumatic stress syndrome deal with everyday. Everyday they relive a painful memory such as a rape, abuse, war memories, or something as simple as a car accident. The memory consumes them and everyone around them. Often they are not able to hold jobs, have families or healthy relationships, and in some extreme cases the person is not able to function at all.

Post traumatic stress syndrome can cause people to of depressed and dysfunctional, as well as stressed and anxious. Sometimes these reactions are so severe, people begin to self medicate through drugs and alcohol. They are typically trying to forget the painful memory and drugs or alcohol can provide that. Often this method of treatment gets out of control, their addictions start to take over their lives just as much as the memory, this can only make things worse for the person.

Instead of self destructive behaviors for post traumatic stress syndrome, there are new treatments being explored. One of those new treatments is hypnosis. Hypnosis or behavior modification works with the mind in a unique way. While undergoing hypnosis, you are able to revisit the traumatic memory and learn to look at it in a different way. You learn to deal with your feelings toward the memory in a different more positive way instead of letting the feelings consume you and those around you. In some cases you may even be able to forget the memory all together.

According to a Canadian newspaper, Ottawacitizen.com, scientists have been using a drug called Propranolol, commonly used in patients with hypertension, to treat and delete memories in people with post traumatic stress syndrome. The drug is injected to a certain part of the brain while thinking of a specific traumatic memory. Once the drug is injected, studies have shown that particular memory has been deleted or replaced. The treatment is still in the early stages or research and development and there are no concrete studies to prove this drug actually works, only suggestions. People who suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome need help now, everyday is like torture for them, and they need something that will work. Hypnosis fits the bill for both.

Hypnosis offers a safe, non invasive, and readily available treatment for those suffering from painful, traumatic memories. No one wants to feel like a prisoner in their own mind or have one memory control everything in their daily lives. These painful memories make everything more difficult, even if they memory it self seems trivial. There are new treatments on the horizon for people who suffer from this condition, there is no need to wait when there is something available to help you now.

Drugs and Alcohol – Behind the Abuse

April 24, 2009 by Sara Mendez

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.8 million Americans need help for drug or alcohol abuse. Of those people only a small percent completed rehab successfully. Students took the same survey and of those students, 2.3 million ages 12-17 reported they needed help for drugs or alcohol. Only 8.2% actually got help from a rehab center. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.

According to Selfesteeminternational.org, recovering addicts and alcoholics indicate that low self esteem is the biggest problem in their lives. They feel alcohol is only a symptom to the alcoholic’s real disease, alcohol or drugs act as a mask. Low self esteem causes and contributes to anxiety, neurosis, defensiveness and ultimately

Selfesteeminternational.org surveyed some 18 year olds who reported using drugs or alcohol heavily. They reported using when they were as young as seven. They indicated feeling alienated by their families, not good enough, anxious, unhappy and overly impulsive. 66% of high school seniors surveyed reported using drugs or alcohol heavily in order to fit in and fill a personal void.

Sometimes the pain of low self esteem is so difficult to deal with that people turn to destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol. They self medicate in hopes that the pain will go away. Addicts use their addictions to help them work through to pain of self hate, or so they think. By drinking or using drugs a vicious cycle of more self hatred starts and before you know it, your life is completely out of control. One drink turns into two, two turns in to three and before you know it your life is all about drinking. You family doesn’t want you around, you have spent all your money and lost your job. Your actions only lead to more self hate and disappointment in yourself.

People have low self esteem for many reasons. However, low self esteem is not caused from one isolated incident but by repetitive criticism over many years. The criticism can come from anyone, a parent, a sibling, teacher or society in general. It is difficult to estimate how many people are experiencing low self esteem, but it is safe to say many people suffer from at least one of the symptoms. Maybe you are happy to see someone fail, overly aggressive, do not recognize your own good qualities, or try to please others because you do not know how to say no.

Fortunately there is help out these for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. One of the most important factors in recovery is acceptance of the disease and being able to identify why you choose to be an addict in the first place. Often it is difficult to address years of low self esteem in a twelve week program. That is why follow up counseling and treatment is recommended. One new treatment that is being recommended is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to identify painful memories causing the low self esteem and help the patient work through the memory and develop new self confidence. Hypnosis is done in a safe environment and is chemical free which appeals to many recovering addicts.

Some people feel therapy and counseling is the best and only treatment needed to help recovering addicts. Unfortunately, if this were true all rehab facilities would offer a 100% cure rate. Most can not even offer a 70% cure rate. It is important to have a treatment plan that will help to identify why you started abusing drugs or alcohol in the first place, and this is difficult to do with a counselor. Often addicts have little trust in counselors and are more censored when talking until they get to know the counselor. Since hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, it allows the addict to think and speak openly about low self esteem issues.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem, but what is more concerning is the underlying behavior of self hate. Until that issue is dealt with, the thought of alcohol and drug abuse is always there for the addict. There are many ways to help improve self esteem but why not do it in a safe environment and start dealing with the real problem today.

According to www.wikipedia.org over 50% of states are covered by a smoking ban of some form. Depending on your state, the ban includes no smoking in bars, casinos, restaurants and in some cases hotel rooms or even patios. With healthcare costs on the rise, America has had enough and is trying to tell other Americans to get healthy! The smoking bans are not going anywhere, if anything they are only going to get more and more strict.

In 2005 Washington state imposed $100.00 fines for lighting up within 25 feet of restaurants, bars, movie complexes and other public places according to an article in USAToday. California also became the first state to out law smoking on all of its beaches, Indiana will not allow smoking at bus stops or ATMs, and in many states healthcare workers are forbidden to smoke during the work day and must sign a contract agreeing to this rule. Other states have taken their smoking bans to another level, in Iowa even smoking in your car anywhere on the grounds with get you a fine USAToday also reports. These trends have no where to go but up mainly due to people raising awareness among the public.

Second hand smoke was once thought of as nothing more than annoying. However research as shown there is cause for major concern about second hand smoke. Those exposed to second hand smoke are at equal risk as smokers to developing lung cancer asthma and emphysema. The public feels an obligation to keep non-smokers healthy largely due to rising healthcare costs and health problems.

Since California has been one of the major players in the smoking ban, they decided to take it one step further. Just when the public thought the ban couldn’t get any tougher, California added the old one two and included a ban on driving while smoking with children in the car. This law passed in 2007 making it one of the most drastic in the nation according to cigarettehouse.net. It outraged smokers who feel smoking in their own car is their business, however California’s govern and its lawmakers felt differently. Children should not be made to be exposed to second hand smoke.

California is one of the leaders of the new smoking ban trend. Over the years California has taken drastic measures to protect their public. Just when the public thought California couldn’t get tougher on smokers, they did. In 2007, California took their non-smoking ban to a new level and started protecting children. California became one of three states to outlaw smoking while driving with a child in the car according to cigarettehouse.net. This outraged some smokers however the public and California’s governor felt the safety and welfare of a child was more important than a smoker having a cigarette.

Fifty years ago smoking in public places and job sites was widely accepted. It was considered a social thing and not thought of as a dirty habit. However after seeing the effects of smoking many have chose to quit. Banning smoking is replacing the smoking socialization factor of fifty years ago, the new trend is healthy and no one should expect this new trend to go anywhere any time soon.

The second secret to shrinking the mid section experience fast weight loss, drink lots of water all day long. Drinking 12 OZ of water 15 minutes before each meal will help reduce the amount of food you are consuming. Most often people eat ” of what they normally would.

Because of the endless amounts of chemicals that are put into our food supply people are struggling with weight gain and belly fat. Another way you can achieve fast weight loss and a smaller waistline is to stop eating high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). You may think that is easier said than done because HFCS is in everything but there are plenty of foods that do not have it. HFCS is responsible for most excess weight gain.
