Making Your Child Ready To Take Solid Food

The saying goes “breastfed is the best fed,” when it comes to providing appropriate nutrition for your newborn. However, once your baby reaches six months they need more than breast milk can provide. Their nutritional needs require something more.

It’s recommended that mothers wait until six months to add solid food to their baby’s diet because it will minimize their chance of having allergies. This can be important if your family history includes allergies.

However if you insist on introducing solids to your baby’s diet earlier than six months you should avoid foods containing gluten such as eggs, cheese or fish. Always consult your doctor before making important decisions regarding your baby’s diet.

If your baby can raise its head, that’s a good indicator that they are ready for solids. They should be able to sit up straight to eat with a spoon.

You’ll find that at first you may have to hold them up while they’re eating solids. After awhile you can probably put them in a high chair. Every child is different so watch your child closely to see how they respond to eating with a spoon. Another good indicator that they are ready to add solids to their diet is if they start chewing their food. They have to be able to move food to the back of their mouths so they can swallow properly.

As your child learns to chew and swallow they will drool less and less. They will eventually start to grow teeth which will make the process easier.

Eating solid foods should help your child to put on a healthy amount of weight. Doctors tell us that babies are usually ready to eat semi-solid food when their birth weight has doubled. This usually happens around sixth months.

If all else fails, you will know when you baby is ready for solids when they become interested in whatever you’re eating.

Various Vegetables Which Pregnant Mothers Should Eat

Unborn babies still need to be fed and fed well – though the question for most women is “what do we eat?” It’s a tricky question and one that you will hopefully find answered as you read on.

Not all foods are appropriate, but that won’t be forever. You’ll be craving foods of all tastes and origins before long in any event.

Here are some things to keep in mind while you’re looking for your next meal.

Food rich in Vitamin A should be avoided. The thing is that vitamin A can easily be poisonous in large amounts and any amount vitamin A is massive to a child. If you do take in vitamin A, you’ll need to make sure to keep it low.

Unless a doctor tells you to do so, you may want to elect to cut vitamin A pills out of your daily oblation to make sure that you and your child are safe.

Vitamin D rich foods can really help your child, on the other hand and it is easily found too. Milk and cheese or in fact, daily products in general have a load of Vitamin D and calcium, both of which are important for you anyway. It’s important to them in daily to make sure that you have as many nutrients as you need. This is especially important to note as some women might find themselves turning away from vitamin D, so they must instead take it in pill or tablet form.

There are some foods that are just bad outright. Maybe you were a big fan of beer before you were pregnant but now you need to pay attention to what you eat now.

Listeria bacteria is dangerous and can be found in raw meat – make sure that your food is well cooked and keep away from smokers to keep your child safe. Fatty foods should also be eaten less.

Treating acne is normally the right move when you have it, but not always. There are stages in a person’s life when you can not try to cure acne just because you want to. During pregnancy is one of those times. As everyone knows, this is a delicate stage in a woman’s life and it is that phase of a woman’s life that she must show extra care of herself. If she feels the need to treat her acne, she must ensure that she arms herself with the right information.

This must also be remembered by those women who may become pregnant. The following are some medications for acne that are not good for use during pregnancy because they are harmful for the fetus:

Hormonal treatment which may contain estrogen, flutamide, and spirolactone. They are definitely ruled out, because they are harmful and may lead to some issues for both the mother and the child. It is best see it as a threat.

Isotretinoin is another one that would put a pregnant woman’s life in danger. It has negative effects as well especially for pregnant women and those that are breast-feeding. It may cause severe health hazards in both the mother and her fetus inside her womb. It is advisable that a woman in the process of taking Isotretinoin must be monitored by a doctor. Those who are trying to get pregnant must avoid the use of Isotretinoin, since it may just trigger negative complications not only for mother but most especially for the child.

Oral tetracyclines, which could be made up of doxycycline, tetracycline and minocycline, must not be an option at all, because it would not do you any good. It has been shown that pregnant women or those who are breast-feeding must refuse the use of this drug because it may produce side effects that could be nothing short of a danger to the life of you and your child. However, the most common side effect is the permanent discoloration of your teeth or / and bone issues.

Topical retinoids, like as tazarotene, adapalene and tretinoin, is the last group that should be stringently avoided. Just like the afore-mentioned treatments, topical retinoids could be a hazard to you and your baby. Even whether you are pregnant or not, it is not a good idea to take any of the treatments mentioned above.

For sure, those women, who are pregnant and have acne, really ought to refrain from the heavy drugs mentioned here. Instead, why not settle for more traditional remedies, such as tying your hair back off your face, washing your face three or four times a day, changing your pillow cases every day, eating more fresh fruit and avoiding fatty, oily and spicy food?

Knowing About Vitamin D Overdose

December 8, 2010 by Victor Properties

Vitamin D is essential to your good health, but like everything else, it should not be overdone! It is possible to experience a vitamin D overdose, especially since we actually need fairly low levels of vitamin D in our bodies to function.

Vitamin D overdose causes Hypervitaminosis D due to toxic levels in the body. It can be serious if the causes of the symptoms are not understood and intake of the vitamin stopped.

What causes of vitamin D overdose? Exposure to sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D, and as little as fifteen minutes of sunlight “therapy” three times a week is all you really need for your body to produce the vitamin D you need. You cannot overdose on vitamin D by getting too much sun, though, as your body only produces what you need.

You will probably also not experience a vitamin D overdose from food sources. Too many supplements are often to blame for excessive vitamin D intake, as your body cannot shut down the absorption of vitamins from supplements. This can cause the build up of vitamin D to toxic levels. Ironically, toxic levels of vitamin D are often the result of therapeutic prescription of the supplement due to an original deficiency – high levels may have been prescribed for patients with rickets, for instance.

A vitamin D overdose is never the result of a single high dose, rather the levels of toxicity in the body builds up in the body’s fat cells over time. Most nutrients that we consume too much of, the body simply gets rid of; however, with vitamin D it has no such mechanism, but stores the excess in the fat cells. It is the stored vitamin D that eventually leads to toxic amounts in your body.

The upper intake levels for babies are 25 micrograms, while for older children and adults, 50 micrograms per day are sufficient. Children will suffer from toxicity more quickly than adults.

What are the health risks of a vitamin D overdose?

1 Because vitamin D has primarily the function of encouraging calcium absorption, high levels of calcium in the blood is possible. This could lead to excessive calcium in the intestinal tract.

2 High levels of phosphate and calcium in the lungs, heart and kidneys, which can damage your organs permanently.

3 Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and weight loss.

4 High levels in the kidneys can lead to kidney stones, renal failure and excessive production of urine.

5 If you are pregnant, a vitamin D overdose can cause deformities in your baby.

6 Other symptoms include bone pain, fatigue, excessive thirst and dehydration, itchy skin and deafness.

An overdose can be treated by simply stopping the intake of supplements, and lowering the amount of calcium you ingest until the symptoms stop.

Always consult your doctor before taking vitamin supplements, and in the case of vitamin D, when you get a lot of sun exposure, you will probably not need to take vitamin D supplements at all. Vitamin D in the correct amounts is essential to good health.

Vitamin D Guidelines When Pregnant

November 12, 2010 by Julie Xillion

Vitamin D is a great part of proper nutrition, but this great pregnancy nutrient has so many other functions in the body. Vitamin D’s role is fundamentally calcium maintenance; in this role it maintains the healthy calcium levels in your bones. When pregnant, vitamin D may work in a similar fashion. However, this specific vitamin also touches hundreds of diverse genes and to affect multiple areas of wellbeing.

The research surrounding vitamin D is expanding every day, and recently the American Academy of Dermatology has updated their recommendations to caution the public not to not getting sufficient vitamin D. Vitamin D insufficiency is where you do not have the optimal amount of vitamin D circulating in your body, but are not identifiably deficient in the nutrient. In reference to their new guidelines, the American Academy of Dermatology’s new guidance is as follows:

“The vitamin D position statement supports the Academy’s long-held conviction on safe ways to get this important vitamin – through a healthy diet which incorporates foods naturally rich in vitamin D, vitamin D-fortified foods and beverages, and vitamin D supplements,” said David Pariser, president of the American Academy of Dermatology.

“The updated recommendation for individuals who practice daily sun protection acknowledges that while protecting the skin from the damaging rays of the sun is important, so is maintaining adequate vitamin D levels. Concern about vitamin D should not lead people to forego sun protection, but rather prompt a conversation with their physician about how to ensure adequate and safe vitamin D intake while guarding against skin cancer.”

Does this alter the guidance on vitamin D and pregnancy? Not specifically. You should still get acceptable sun exposure to manufacture the vitamin and acquire the rest through a healthy and balanced diet. Supplementation may help as well.

Chiropractor In San Diego Reveals That You May Be What Your Mother Ate!

November 10, 2010 by Michael Pritsker

As a chiropractor at New Century Spine and Chiropractic Centers in San Diego, many people ask if their back pain is due to bad genes. Is Nature or nurture more important? The argument has been raging on for decades. Many people want to know if they are strictly the end result of your upbringing and actions. Or are we all simply a product of your genes?

A safe bet is that we are a combination of both. Our genes give us a blueprint with both positives and negatives and our actions either maximize or minimize the hand we’ve been dealt. But, a new science has thickened the plot! How? The new science is called “Epigenetics” and it attempts to explain how the environment can modify your genes. That’s a unique twist to this debate – wouldn’t you say?

In a report that was published, scientists from the University of Utah showed rats that received poor nutrition in the womb genetically altered themselves to be born into a nutritionally deficient environment.

What’s that mean? The rat fetuses’ genes actually changed to prepare them for the environment they were going to be born into. Since there was poor nutrition in the womb, the rats were likely to grow to smaller sizes when compared to others born to “normal” nutrition levels.

Being smaller was not the only negative. The rats also had a higher risk for many health problems throughout their lives such as: diabetes, growth retardation, cardiovascular disease, obesity and neuro developmental delays. These are just to name a few. But These Are Rats! How Are Humans Affected?

Also according to Science Daily: “The new ‘epigenetics’ has taught us how nature is changed by nurture,” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. According to Science Daily, “Although the study involved rats, the genes and cellular mechanisms involved are the same as those in humans.” The jury’s in and, yes, expectant moms really are eating for two and not just for one. This study shows not only that we need to address problems such as preeclampsia during pregnancy, but also that prenatal care is far more important than anyone could have imagined a decade ago.” This is something that every expectant mother should understand.

After reading this interesting new information a few questions come to mind: If a fetus can alter its genes to adapt to the environment they are being born into – can a person alter their genes to adapt to their environment AFTER they are born? And since I treat patients with chiropractic care, what effect does Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy have on the potential of a child? If the environment is altered for the better – it makes sense the fetus would adapt genetically in a positive way.

Until proper research is done, no one can be 100% sure. But one thing certainly makes sense: During pregnancy, everything should be done to ensure the developing fetus has the best possible environment to grow into. Proper exercise, balanced diet, and a healthy spine with proper chiropractic care are all key elements in growing a healthy baby.
