Finding Plus Size Maternity Clothes For You!
December 14, 2009 by Robyn Rae
When I started shopping for Plus Size Maternity Clothes it quickly became apparent that I was about to become a celebrity. I was about to become famous. My face would be on the cover of fashion magazines and my name would be plastered in headlines around the world. People would come from near and far to stand in line for days on end just to get one look at me. Why, they might even give me some kind of title or even a crown. I’d be treated like royalty. Because apparently, by the looks of the maternity clothes I was finding in the shops, only women who are size 14 or smaller get pregnant!
When I found out I was pregnant, I didn’t expect, at size 20, to be able to just walk into any store and find an enormous selection of plus size maternity clothes. I mean, it’s hard enough finding decent plus size clothes when you’re not pregnant. Manufacturers are only just beginning to realize that there are a lot of us plus size women out here and we’d like to look fashionably in something other than a tent or a caftan. But when I started looking for plus size maternity clothes I didn’t expect to find nothing at all. I mean, what do these people think? Do they think that nobody gets pregnant if they wear a size larger than 14?
The good news is that, while plus size maternity clothes may still be difficult to find at the mall or your neighborhood department store, there are more and more resources available online. Shops like 2Chix.com, Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Motherhood.com, and even Old Navy are increasing the styles they offer to plus size pregnant women. These online retailers realize that life doesn’t stop if you’re not a size 12.
When shopping on line for plus size maternity clothes, make sure to keep your measurements in mind and allow plenty of room for growth. You may be a size 18 at the beginning of your pregnancy, but chances are, as your pregnancy progresses, you may gain another size. Most maternity clothes are made to allow for this increase, but, as we plus size women know, in our sizes the manufacturers don’t always follow all the norms.
Fortunately for pregnant women, no matter what the size, clothing with an empire waist has come back in style. I used to hate these baby doll dresses and shirts because I thought they made me look pregnant, but they’re a staple in my closet now. With some of the baby doll shirts I have, I like to tie a ribbon or sash just under the bust line to highlight my baby bump but usually they work as a fashionable statement all by themselves. And I found a beautiful black dress with an empire waist for the holidays. I sewed a bright red ribbon along the empire seam line that drew lots of attention to my belly and you wouldn’t believe the number of compliments I received on that dress. My pregnant friends are always asking to borrow it.
When shopping for plus size maternity clothes, just like any other time in your life, shop wisely and get yourself a couple of really nice pieces that you can mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. Even us plus size girls need a closet full of maternity clothes!
