Pregnancy Issues – Things You Could Try At Home To Induce Labor

Giving birth is one of the most wonderful experiences a woman can have. But sometimes a baby is in no hurry to make an appearance and might need a little encouragement. If you are overdue and tired, there are some safe methods you could try at home to stimulate labor and finally meet your baby.

You probably already discussed the possibility of medical induction with your doctor. You should know, however, that medical induction comes with many risks and side effects. If possible, you should try to avoid it and use it only as a last resort.

Pregnancy can be ended the same way it started – by having sexual intercourse. The hormones in the semen called prostaglandins can help soften the cervix. During orgasm a woman releases large amounts of oxytocin, which stimulate contractions. Nipple stimulation also brings about the release of oxytocin.

At nine months pregnant many women don’t desire sex. No problem, there are other options. The simplest one includes gravity. The idea is simple – using the force of gravity to help the baby to descend and speeding up the labor process. Walking or bouncing on an exercise ball can do the trick.

Some herbs, like black and blue cohosh, promote contractions and help the cervix to dilate. Their use, however, is not recommended, because they are possibly unsafe. They have been associated with severe hemorrhaging during childbirth and cardiac complications in newborns.

Another method, not widely known in Western civilization, but extremely popular in Asian countries, is a technique called maternity acupressure. It has been effectively used for more than 5000 years. It is intended to induce labor naturally and also make childbirth easier.

Maternity acupressure, or labor acupressure as it is sometimes called, is based on the same ideas and principles as acupuncture. The only difference is that it doesn’t use needles, but simply fingers to apply gentle pressure to specific points. Women who use this technique experience normal childbirth with substantially less complications.

Ways To Induce Labor Naturally At Home

When you are past your due date, you’re probably keenly awaiting for your baby to make an appearance. But before you consider medical induction, it’s important to understand the dangers of the medications. If not for medical reasons or as an emergency, you should try to avoid medical labor induction.

There are many natural methods you could try before medical induction. In this article we will explore some of the possibilities that are at your disposal at home.

Having sex is one of the favorite for many pregnant women. The semen contains a hormone called prostaglandin, which is actually similar to the medications for inducing labor, and can help soften the cervix and start dilation. Additionally, a woman releases oxytocin, which can help stimulate contractions. So why not end your pregnancy the same way you started it – by having sex.

Some methods use the force of gravity to bring the baby down. Walking around, squatting, bouncing on the exercise ball and similar activities can all help the baby to descend into the birthing canal and into the world. Some women also find walking helps them to cope with the discomforts associated with contractions.

Another option are herbs. Blue and black cohosh are believed to have properties to stimulate childbirth. You should know, however, they are potentially unsafe. They can cause excess bleeding during labor and hearth problems in newborn babies. Not recommended.

One of the most effective methods that has been used for thousands of years, but is not very well know in the western world is acupressure, or maternity acupressure, to be exact. It has been proven to be both safe and effective.

Maternity or labor acupressure uses fingers and thumbs to apply gentle pressure to key points on the skin called acupoints. This can strengthen contractions, improve dilation of the cervix, lessen labor pains, shorten the delivery time, and relax the mother. It can be safely used at home. Recommended.

Pregnancy and Acid Reflux

June 16, 2009 by Lyn Silverstreet

During pregnancy, a womans body goes through lots of changes, very quickly. Most of the time, the changes are exciting. Unfortunately, some of the changes cause feelings of discomfort such as acid reflux.

Pregnancy triggers a lot of hormonal changes very quickly. Hormones will change the womans body chemistry, which requires the rest of the body to adapt to the changes. Hormones can also cause additional stomach acid to produce, causing acid reflux.

Acid reflux is uncomfortable for anyone who experiences it. There are plenty of over the counter products to treat and even prevent acid reflux, but they are just temporary solutions. Acid reflux can occur each time a person eats. Coupling that with the rapidly changing hormone levels caused by pregnancy, acid reflux is a common occurrence.

As the fetus grows, it puts an ever increasing pressure on the stomach area. This can cause stomach acid to move up into the esophagus. As the pressure increases, the acid reflux symptoms also increase for most pregnant women. Making smart food choices and mild antacids usually take care of the symptoms.

Unfortunately, acid reflux during pregnancy is completely normal and just part of the process for a majority of pregnant women. Antacids taken as prescribed have shown not to cause harm to the fetus, but they can be high in sodium.

Diet is the best way to minimize acid reflux symptoms. Avoid products that are high in acid. Most citrus and citrus juices are extremely high in acid and can trigger acid reflux. If you are pregnant, keep track of what you consume to learn what triggers acid reflux.

The human body is not built to take in large amounts of food at one time. The body works best when it receives a regular supplement of nutrients, which come in the form of food. Eating more frequent and smaller meals allows the body to digest the food properly. This also provides a great opportunity for pregnant women to inject healthy foods into their diet.

If there is an elixir for pregnancy and acid reflux, it would be water. Water keeps the body hydrated, clean and can significantly reduce or eliminate acid reflux symptoms. If you do choose to eat acidic foods or drink acidic juices (orange juice, cranberry juice, etc.), cut the quantities in half and drink equal amounts of water.

Lying horizontally often triggers acid reflux. Even just a few inches of elevation will make all the difference. Unfortunately, pregnancy and acid reflux go hand in hand. Talk to your doctor about how to treat the acid reflux, and ways to prevent it. You may not be able to eliminate it altogether, but managing it properly will make the pregnancy much more comfortable!

Smoking And Gum Disease Poses Big Risks To Your Health

There are more disadvantages than advantages when it comes to smoking. Even though the association between smoking and gum disease is widely known, experts had just currently completed a national research to certify the connection between smoking and gum disease. Red, tender bleeding and swollen gums are common manifestations of gum disease. In this articles, we shall discuss the link between cigarette smoking and gum disease.

The body’s ability to heal is compromised because smoking compresses the blood vessels, preventing it from flushing the tissues with antibodies that can slow healing. Cigarette smoking increases risks of health problems complications. The relationship between smoking and gum disease is quite obvious.

Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemicals in which many of them are poisonous. Current smokers were about four times more likely than people who have never smoked to have periodontitis, but ex-smokers who had abstained for 11 years faced no increased risk, according to the findings published in the Journal of Periodontology. Results showed that bone loss was greater in the subjects exposed to secondhand smoke regardless of if it was smoke from light or non-light cigarettes than those who were exposed to no smoke at all. The number ONE bad habit you can do that will affect your gums (negatively) is smoke.

Cigarette smoking may well be the major preventable risk factor for periodontal disease. Overall, regular cannabis users were three times more likely to have significant periodontal attachment loss than non-smokers of cannabis. The gingiva, being the most superficial tissue, provides most of the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease, such as swelling, redness, bleeding, recession etc.

Presently, there are various options for reversing swollen gums and gum disease, and are better options for expensive professional oral treatments, nonetheless it doesn’t mean dental consultations aren’t necessary, oral cavity and gums need to be cleaned. It is vital to prevent the advance of swollen gums and gum disease to more serious conditions like periodontitis, putting your dental health in top priority is essential in order to prevent swollen gums, gum disease and other probable health risks and complications from taking over. Unfortunately, most people affected by this condition are unaware of that they are suffering from gum disease since early symptoms appear to be painless.

Your dentist knows what the best gum disease treatment for you, follow the instructions and combine it with superior oral hygiene, and you’ll never know you will have again that healthy teeth and gums. Regular dental visit is important so that your dentist can recommend the appropriate treatment in the early stage of gum disease. By stopping smoking and exercising regularly, the gums can improve.

Lowering the Risk Factors of Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease

Lowering the Risk Factors

Diabetes is a dangerous health problem. In adults, diabetes is related to long-term nutritional neglect and abuse.

Most of us don’t eat breakfast. Our fuel supply is depleted, and we wind up running on fumes. We grab a high-calorie muffin or a candy bar later in the morning when we’re really, really hungry. What we don’t know is that this snack causes insulin to dump out of the pancreas into the bloodstream, as the body attempts to process the surge in blood glucose from the snack we just ate.

This pattern is repeated throughout the day. A graph of the average person’s blood sugar levels would show sharp spikes – both highs and lows – in every 24-hour period. Eventually, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas wear out. The result is consistently high levels of blood glucose which we term, diabetes.

Diabetes may cause severe eye problems, severe kidney problems, and severe circulatory problems. It is associated with obesity, heart disease, and increased mortality. Not good.

An obvious preventive strategy would be to ensure that blood glucose levels are steady throughout the day. Actually, this is easy to do. All that’s required is to develop healthy eating habits and do regular exercise.

Eat breakfast – a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mixed with a 6-ounce cup of yogurt is all you need in the morning.

Do food combining at every meal – always eat a combination of protein and carbohydrate as much as possible.

No between-meal snacks please!

Regular exercise that is challenging and fun – build-up gradually and be consistent

We’re in the middle of several deadly epidemics in the United States. Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are affecting more and more people every year. Recent statistics show that two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Thirty percent of American children are obese. Approximately 21 million Americans have diabetes. One child out of every 500 has type I diabetes. In America, 72 million adults have high blood pressure. These are shocking statistics, considering that U.S. health care expenditures totaled $2 trillion in 2006. That’s 2 TRILLION dollars.

As Americans, we’re getting less healthy by the day. The good news is there are many things we can do about these trends. There is real action that every American, young and old, can take to support and protect their health and well-being. These action steps all focus on lifestyle – the choices we make each and every day.

The first step is an honest self-assessment. When was the last time I exercised? Does my clothes size increase every couple of years? How many times during the week do I eat fast food? When was the last time I ate an apple instead of half a box of cookies?

Regardless of the answers, it is possible to become healthy and fit again, whatever your current circumstances. You CAN lose 10 or 20 or 30 or however many pounds. You CAN climb stairs without getting out of breath. You CAN regain the youthful glow of vitality. You CAN be vigorous and proud of your body, rather than worrying about what’s going to be the next thing to break down.

Healthy eating and regular exercise are essential parts of the solution to combating obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.1,2 These practices have the magical effect of resetting your metabolic clock – your body shifts from a pattern of storing fat to a pattern of burning fat.3 Over time, with a nutritious food plan and consistent exercise, you even burn fat while you’re resting! Your body is very smart. You just have to treat it right.

Your chiropractor is a wonderful asset – both as a health care practitioner and as a guide – on your journey toward fitness and wellness. Your chiropractor has extensive resources available on practical nutrition and how to design a supportive food plan. He or she has deep knowledge regarding the types of exercises and activities that will be right for you. You and your chiropractor can design an exercise program that will be both fun and rewarding. Working together, you’ll be maximizing your health and vitality. You will begin to fulfill a way of living that will support you in being healthy and well for years to come.

Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome-Escape the Torture

Memories have a unique way of helping people. They can make you smile or laugh, you can look back on a memory and learn something new about yourself or someone else, sometimes they can make you cry. Though memories are not always happy, you can always learn something new. Often we wish we could relive certain memories everyday and enjoy them or sometimes we wish we could go back and change things. Changing a memory might seem impossible, but with today’s advancing science and other clinical practices, changing a memory does not seem so far fetched.

Think back for a moment, find a memory you would like to relive. Think about how you feel, how the memory makes you feel. Perhaps you want to change something in the memory, think about how this could change your life. Now imagine for a moment that this memory is a traumatic memory. You would be reliving this memory over and over again everyday. The memory will torment you and cause stress and anxiety in all aspects of your life. This is what people with post traumatic stress syndrome deal with everyday. Everyday they relive a painful memory such as a rape, abuse, war memories, or something as simple as a car accident. The memory consumes them and everyone around them. Often they are not able to hold jobs, have families or healthy relationships, and in some extreme cases the person is not able to function at all.

Post traumatic stress syndrome can cause people to of depressed and dysfunctional, as well as stressed and anxious. Sometimes these reactions are so severe, people begin to self medicate through drugs and alcohol. They are typically trying to forget the painful memory and drugs or alcohol can provide that. Often this method of treatment gets out of control, their addictions start to take over their lives just as much as the memory, this can only make things worse for the person.

Instead of self destructive behaviors for post traumatic stress syndrome, there are new treatments being explored. One of those new treatments is hypnosis. Hypnosis or behavior modification works with the mind in a unique way. While undergoing hypnosis, you are able to revisit the traumatic memory and learn to look at it in a different way. You learn to deal with your feelings toward the memory in a different more positive way instead of letting the feelings consume you and those around you. In some cases you may even be able to forget the memory all together.

According to a Canadian newspaper, Ottawacitizen.com, scientists have been using a drug called Propranolol, commonly used in patients with hypertension, to treat and delete memories in people with post traumatic stress syndrome. The drug is injected to a certain part of the brain while thinking of a specific traumatic memory. Once the drug is injected, studies have shown that particular memory has been deleted or replaced. The treatment is still in the early stages or research and development and there are no concrete studies to prove this drug actually works, only suggestions. People who suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome need help now, everyday is like torture for them, and they need something that will work. Hypnosis fits the bill for both.

Hypnosis offers a safe, non invasive, and readily available treatment for those suffering from painful, traumatic memories. No one wants to feel like a prisoner in their own mind or have one memory control everything in their daily lives. These painful memories make everything more difficult, even if they memory it self seems trivial. There are new treatments on the horizon for people who suffer from this condition, there is no need to wait when there is something available to help you now.

Drugs and Alcohol – Behind the Abuse

April 24, 2009 by Sara Mendez

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.8 million Americans need help for drug or alcohol abuse. Of those people only a small percent completed rehab successfully. Students took the same survey and of those students, 2.3 million ages 12-17 reported they needed help for drugs or alcohol. Only 8.2% actually got help from a rehab center. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.

According to Selfesteeminternational.org, recovering addicts and alcoholics indicate that low self esteem is the biggest problem in their lives. They feel alcohol is only a symptom to the alcoholic’s real disease, alcohol or drugs act as a mask. Low self esteem causes and contributes to anxiety, neurosis, defensiveness and ultimately

Selfesteeminternational.org surveyed some 18 year olds who reported using drugs or alcohol heavily. They reported using when they were as young as seven. They indicated feeling alienated by their families, not good enough, anxious, unhappy and overly impulsive. 66% of high school seniors surveyed reported using drugs or alcohol heavily in order to fit in and fill a personal void.

Sometimes the pain of low self esteem is so difficult to deal with that people turn to destructive behaviors such as drugs and alcohol. They self medicate in hopes that the pain will go away. Addicts use their addictions to help them work through to pain of self hate, or so they think. By drinking or using drugs a vicious cycle of more self hatred starts and before you know it, your life is completely out of control. One drink turns into two, two turns in to three and before you know it your life is all about drinking. You family doesn’t want you around, you have spent all your money and lost your job. Your actions only lead to more self hate and disappointment in yourself.

People have low self esteem for many reasons. However, low self esteem is not caused from one isolated incident but by repetitive criticism over many years. The criticism can come from anyone, a parent, a sibling, teacher or society in general. It is difficult to estimate how many people are experiencing low self esteem, but it is safe to say many people suffer from at least one of the symptoms. Maybe you are happy to see someone fail, overly aggressive, do not recognize your own good qualities, or try to please others because you do not know how to say no.

Fortunately there is help out these for those suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. One of the most important factors in recovery is acceptance of the disease and being able to identify why you choose to be an addict in the first place. Often it is difficult to address years of low self esteem in a twelve week program. That is why follow up counseling and treatment is recommended. One new treatment that is being recommended is hypnosis. Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind to identify painful memories causing the low self esteem and help the patient work through the memory and develop new self confidence. Hypnosis is done in a safe environment and is chemical free which appeals to many recovering addicts.

Some people feel therapy and counseling is the best and only treatment needed to help recovering addicts. Unfortunately, if this were true all rehab facilities would offer a 100% cure rate. Most can not even offer a 70% cure rate. It is important to have a treatment plan that will help to identify why you started abusing drugs or alcohol in the first place, and this is difficult to do with a counselor. Often addicts have little trust in counselors and are more censored when talking until they get to know the counselor. Since hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, it allows the addict to think and speak openly about low self esteem issues.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a very serious problem, but what is more concerning is the underlying behavior of self hate. Until that issue is dealt with, the thought of alcohol and drug abuse is always there for the addict. There are many ways to help improve self esteem but why not do it in a safe environment and start dealing with the real problem today.
